Spring Equinox 2020

Originally published on March 19, 2020.

This Spring Equinox, many of us find ourselves quarantined alone, with family, pets, or loved ones. Some of us awoke to the layering of spring snow or rays of sunshine, finally on our faces. Maybe we woke up from foggy dreams with grief in our hearts and in the soles of our feet. Our hearts fluttering with what has been and what will be. Quite possibly someone woke up with new inventions, new ideas squirming to be written on a blank page, the smell of possibility, hopes, and examples of what could be. However we may feel on this day, this special equinox is known for its warm and tender hold, for its magic and power in the rebirthing cycle, and for its grace in this struggle. On this particular date, day and night exist on equal playing grounds, often representing the need for balance.

Balance. Rest. Contemplation.

All themes that this time of the year brings. Themes many of us are forced to acknowledge in the mirror right now.

We find this a time of new beginnings, seeds (the planting of or watching the old resiliently grow), new life, and new light. In my own ancestry and tradition, the spring equinox always falls on the Persian New Year, known as Nowruz. With this, for me it has also meant connecting with ancestors, checking in, celebrating who we come from, sharing their stories, and sharing this time with family and loved ones. Today I drink strong black tea mixed with bee pollen for my great grandmother, hum ancient melodies as I spruce up the house for my grandmother, light candles for my lineage, pray for my uncles, keep my secrets close, braid my hair in my dreams, leave offerings of our favorite candies on the altar, keep a grounded resolve for my grandfather, and eat a homemade meal with my mother and father.

How will you honor your ancestors during this equinox?

How might you honor your own shadow and your own brilliant light in the same day?

~

I have a small tarot spread below to help aid in connecting, grounding, and gaining insight into the current death and rebirth that is happening not only within the Equinox but within society/the world as a whole right now. Seeds were planted a long time ago. We are starting to see As Above and So Below working in tandem during this crucial and important shift. There may be many emotions swimming around and through us currently and they are all valid, each and every one of them. Take a deep breathe. Let’s take a giant deep breathe together, grab each others hands (far and near), and know we are not alone, all earthly and ethereal planes included.

You may also change the wording “in my life” to “in the collective” if you wish to gain some insight and guidance into the death and rebirth that the world is undergoing.

TAROT SPREAD: GROUND AND CONNECT

1} What seeds (in my life) are still underground?

2} How may I nourish them?

3} What seeds (in my life) are sprouting?

4} How may I invite them in?

5} How many I continue supporting this cycle of rebirth?

6} What can I release, let go, and let flow right now in the process?

BLESSED EQUINOX, WITCHES & BABES.
